When the local nursery ordered aprons for the children on duty, their special wish was to get aprons that boys would gladly wear too.
It was such a lovely wish that before I opened my design folder 1001 thoughts and possibilities ran through my head about how to design aprons that boys would wear not just gladly but with real pride.
The first decision was to leave out the traditional pockets, because whatever solution I arrived at, it was always the pockets that somehow did not fit. At the same time I tried to work out whether aprons need pockets at all, and why. Does anyone ever use them, and what for? I never did find an answer.
So I left the pockets out of both the boys' and the girls' aprons.
The search for fabric took nearly a week. I had some idea of the fabric I might use, but none of them felt right. Nor were there two fabrics with the same lovely pattern in both boys' and girls' colours, to make aprons of different colours.
In the end, after long deliberation and playing about with colours, I settled on a dark grey fabric, the offcuts of which I already had. And since the tones used in the pattern of the main fabric were dark blue, white and mustard yellow alongside the dark grey, I combined exactly those colours into the decorative elements of my aprons.
How many times I reworked the design and how I finally arrived at bow ties, I will not describe. But only once the boys' aprons were finished, bow ties on the front, did I take out the lighter fabrics, finish the design for the girls' aprons and make the first sample.

Boys' aprons

Boys' aprons
I found that if the boys are going about in bow ties, then the girls cannot be left with something simpler and duller. And so the girls' aprons came about, with a white bib and white binding, decorated with a splendid white rosette with a gold rimmed mother of pearl button at its heart.

Girls' aprons

Girls' aprons

These are aprons for little girls and boys. Aprons that small, capable helpers wear with pride both in the kitchen helping mum and dad and at nursery doing their duty for the day. These are aprons that adorn the ones who wear them and let them feel dignified, handsome and worthy even while working.
The aprons are sewn from a quality cotton and polyester blend. The binding and ties are of fourfold fabric. The bow ties and rosettes are carefully finished and will not lose their good looks through many washes. The rosettes are made by hand, and the little folds are secured with machine stitching. Do not iron the rosettes.
The aprons are made in three sizes:
1) apron length 40 cm, for ages 2 to 4.
2) apron length 50 cm, for ages 4 to 6.
3) apron length 60 cm, for ages 6 to 8.
If you like these aprons, let me know. I can sew more. The odd aprons I made over and above the orders so far I will add to my Liisula web shop.
A set of aprons for mum and the children

With my hand already warmed up from making aprons, I made a large apron for a friend who is a mum, alongside the children's aprons. Since she, like me, keeps and adores poultry, the bib of mum's apron got a sweet picture of a hen, the lower border a few little birds as well, and lace everywhere. In the middle of the apron I used the same fabric as on the children's aprons.
