A quilt made with care and love captures our wishes and dreams, our thoughts and memories. When a child's first quilt becomes too small over time, it is still dear to the child, giving warmth, calm and a sense of security.
Quilt sizes:
- A quilt less than 100 cm long: for a cradle, a pram, a car seat, or as a cuddle quilt.
- A quilt 100 to 130 cm long suits a toddler's bed, roughly up to the age of 4.
- A quilt 130 to 160 cm long suits an extendable bed, for instance, for pre-schoolers and younger schoolchildren.
- A quilt 150 to 190 cm long is for young people, almost grown ups.
- An adult bed is about 200 cm long.
Materials:
In our patchwork we use above all natural fabrics, that is cotton and linen. Natural fabrics are the best, because a natural fibre breathes, is hard wearing and biodegradable, is a natural insulator and is kind to the skin.
For filling children's quilts we use above all cotton wadding, but also lofted or polyester wadding, which is considered an allergy free material. Sometimes wool filling as well.
Instead of wadding, especially in children's quilts, we also use cotton towelling. A quilt filled with towelling is thinner but denser and heavier than one with wadding. A towelling quilt is especially good for a restless child, as a heavier quilt calms a child and gives them the safe feeling of being held.
The price of a quilt is set by:
- the size of the quilt: the measurements are given with every quilt.
- the complexity of the pattern and the size of the pattern blocks. The simplest is a pattern sewn from large squares; many times more time consuming is a complex pattern combined from far smaller squares or even tiny pieces.
- the density and complexity of the quilting. When buying a quilt, pay particular attention to whether and how densely the quilt is quilted. A quilt sewn from squares should at least be quilted along the squares. But a particularly interesting and equally time consuming background comes from dense quilting, which covers the whole surface of the quilt in an intricate pattern. The smaller the pieces a quilt's pattern consists of, the denser the quilting should be. Quilting fixes the layers of the quilt to one another and makes it stand up to use and washing. - the price of the fabrics and the filling material.
Caring for a quilt:
All the quilts offered in our web shop are carefully quilted and therefore machine washable.
Wash a quilt on the wool programme. It is advisable to use a washing gel, which keeps the fabrics soft even after repeated washing. When washing brightly coloured quilts it is advisable to put a colour catcher sheet in the machine.
Dry a quilt hanging. Quilts must not be ironed or dried in a tumble dryer.
