The patchwork room. A wall hanging for Hubert.

Picture

A wall hanging for Hubert's play corner.
A very inspiring commission: a brightly coloured wall hanging with a sun, bears and trains and aeroplanes for a child's play corner.
I dug out my fabrics with bears on them and started work at the end of January.
I imagined a week, two at the outside, and the work would be done. But time goes on and on and I am still fiddling away at it. I am making three similar wall hangings at once, but in different colour combinations: one for Hubert, one for my grandchild and a third for sale.
But as always, once again I did not manage to plan the time the work would take, and therefore the deadlines, correctly. It all looks so simple and straightforward. But when you start, everything takes far longer than I see in my mind's eye.
All those squares, starting with the choice of fabrics, the cutting, the sewing together and the constant pressing of the seams. Choosing, combining and placing the appliques; cutting out the bears, trains and aeroplanes and the fusible interfacing shapes exactly the same size for all of them; positioning the appliques, ironing and fusing them, quilting round the edges. Pockets, elastic quilting, double fastenings.
The big balloons alone, with all their coloured details, fusible interfacings and quilting, took several days to make. Then the frame in the right size and a matching tone, pressing the layers of fabric, steaming, fixing, quilting through. The binding. The hanging loops. Making templates for the felt appliques, cutting them out of the fabric, fitting them into place, quilting. Decorative quilting on the border. Buttons and so on.
I wonder whether it will even be finished before spring... 🙂
It is embarrassing that the deadlines for the other work have gone totally to pieces again. But at the same time it is a boundlessly good feeling when such lovely, brightly coloured work made with heart is finished.

Hubert's quilt is finished.
