Natural or synthetic material?

Naturaalne või sünteetiline materjal?

How far do you prefer natural materials?

I, for instance, cannot wear any nylon, polyester or other dresses, blouses, scarves and so on made of dubious material. When choosing clothes in a shop, the first thing I look at is the material label. As far as I am concerned a synthetic product can be as pretty or as cheap as you like; I cannot wear it. It makes my body itch and sweat and sometimes I feel quite unwell.

That is why I put great emphasis on the choice of materials in my sewing too. With bags it does not matter. With quilts, though, and especially children's and baby quilts, it does.

Looking at other crafters' work, I am very surprised at how massively baby products are knitted from 100% synthetic materials, viscose, acrylic and the like. Why? Do people really wear anything at all themselves and see no difference for small children either between a product made of, say, merino wool and one of viscose?

Clearly there are sensitive people and less sensitive ones. Perhaps for some babies it makes no difference. But what if it does? Perhaps that is why the baby cries or sweats or has a heat rash, because the wrong clothes have been chosen.

On my first quilts both the pattern and the backing were cotton, but for the filling there was nothing to be found on the market but polyester wadding or blackish grey half wool wadding. With light coloured quilts I unavoidably used polyester. It is said to be suitable for people allergic to dust, for instance, as it is an allergy free material.
At some point I discovered cotton towelling. I used it inside children's quilts as filling. A pleasantly heavy little quilt has a calming effect on a child.

On today's children's quilts I already use cotton wadding, and I am trying to make a start with bamboo and silk wadding as well.

The pictures show little quilts with a cotton fabric pattern, a cotton backing and cotton wadding.
