Whatever ready made clothes you are cutting into strips, a light goes on in your head: how to use the most interesting details of the previous garment in the new work.
Embroidery, appliques, beaded patterns, pockets, labels and fastenings. All of these help make a new piece more distinctive. This time, running the rotary cutter over the fronts of a dress shirt, my eye was caught not only by the labels and the small embroideries on the yokes and pocket corners but by the fastenings as well. Such sweet little buttons, such neat seams. They looked up at me and cried: do not cut us up. 🙂
So I stopped the cutter and scratched my head. What do I do now?
And so came the thought of making pockets into two of the quilts, in among the pattern, using the fastenings of the dress shirts. For the two whose pattern can accommodate the fastenings: Kirke's quilt made of squares, and Karl's quilt with its pattern of wider strips (6 cm).
