The commission finished today: seat covers for a car's front seats.
The story goes that a year ago somebody wanted to order car seat covers from me. I refused, because every new product is one great fuss and bother, and at any remotely sensible price you get no more than 1 euro an hour for it, or even less: new techniques, tools to be bought and so on.
A year went by and the person came back to me with the same problem. There is nowhere to get seat covers (that suit them) for the car. The seats are white...
I let them talk a hole in my head... A big hole.
I took an old bed sheet and drew the outlines of the seats onto it in the car, measured the heights, the distances and all sorts of measurements I thought would be needed. Then I sewed a trial piece from single layer fabric and called the car in to try on its dress.
I put the trial piece on the seat and cut it to size, measured again here and there and wrote the measurements down. After that, following the trial piece, I could take on the real materials: upholstery fabrics, wadding, a white lining.
I cut it out, overlocked the edges, did the other seams with the ordinary machine, the thicker seams and the corded binding with the leather machine. All the thicker seams finished with binding. Elastics into the edges, hook and loop tape on the headrest cover (oddly enough the headrest could not be taken off this car's seat). The seat part is quilted through crosswise at 10 cm intervals, so that the 3 layers of fabric stay properly in place while you sit on them.
One more fitting, the finishing, and it was done. Close to a week's worth of working hours plus materials.
If anyone thinks I might sew them something like this too, then first work out what a week's work should cost in your view. 🙂 If you are willing to pay a sum like that, we can talk. Otherwise, strength and energy and nimble fingers to you
