The capable leaders of our choir decided to modernise how information reaches the singers and took a Google calendar into use. So we got the new season's schedule of rehearsals, concerts and trips not as an email but as a link to a Google calendar.
It took me a long time to work up to it and I did not want to press the "add" button at all, because I immediately pictured how, on top of today's revolting pop up windows saying "update" in front and "update" behind, ever more notices I do not want to see there would start spamming my screen. On top of that I have a serious resistance to putting my personal reminders on the internet. Splitting information between two calendars is not very sensible either.
So I took out my notebook and pen and asked our e-man for the information about events without joining the Google calendar.
I got the answer: "Look in your calendar application to see whether a Google calendar can be imported into it."
What else could I do but press "add" and join an internet based shared calendar.
To my surprise I discovered that my calendar already held, by itself, the birthdays of long ago acquaintances and a few other dates; naturally the weeks begin on Sunday and the most important events in my calendar are now Thanksgiving and the like.
I took my dear notebook out of my bag, linen, flowered, with lace, and felt deep joy and satisfaction at it.
If there are others among you who try to live at least part of the day without a screen and keyboard, then know this:
