Patchwork rug Sun Wheel, round hall rug for kindergarten (3 m)

Patchwork rug Sun Wheel for a kindergarten. The rug shown in the photo is 3 m across and was sewn for a kindergarten in a seaside village. Keyword number one for the person who ordered it was the eight-pointed star. The eight-pointed star, the cross with eight tips, the light-radiating cross, is widely known across Europe as a magical good-luck sign and as a symbol of love and fertility. With the kindergarten's location in mind I added the sea and flounders, a ferry passing on the horizon, the beach with children playing ball, gnarled pines and a huge disc of sun. Since this is a rug, I avoided large light-coloured areas. That is also why the sky behind the sun is rather cloudy and the forest floor cheerfully full of flowers. The materials come to about 26 m in all: the base fabric, the background fabric and the appliqués sewn onto it, the wadding and the backing. This whole large patchwork rug is densely quilted. I have no quilting machine, everything is quilted freehand. That means I switch off the feed dogs on the machine (the teeth that push the fabric along), put my palms on the work and move it under the needle to draw the outlines and patterns onto the fabric.
